On January 22, Portfolio Manager Alfred Lam joined us for lunch and shared some critically important insights on the geo-political landscape, market outlook, and how AI is reshaping our lives (and our investment opportunities). Overall the tone was surprisingly optimistic given current world dynamics – here are our four key takeaways.
1) Alfred is bullish on the market outlook – he and his team believe that a) there is no condition present for a bear market, b) despite all-time highs, the market is not overvalued, and c) companies continue to outperform expectations.
2) Artificial Intelligence is this century’s Industrial Revolution – yes, you read that right. Alfred believes this AI paradigm shift will be even more significant than the introduction of the internet or smart phones. Forget the robots you’re imagining; replace the idea of a humanoid machine with computer “brains” that can self-drive cars, completely overhaul enterprise models, and cure cancer and chronic illnesses!
3) This year’s economic theme is productivity – as companies continue to both innovate and to adopt AI, productivity could very well surpass anything we imagined, and markets (and people) should benefit from this. Be prepared (and invested)!
4) The world is more peaceful now than it was 2 months ago – yes, this is a controversial take! Alfred believes the US’s scalpel-like Venezuelan extraction (whether or not you agree with the action itself) demonstrated the sophistication of the US military, and the subsequent settling of the Greenland situation also relieved significant tension there.
So what does this mean for you and your clients? It is crucial to balance your cash and income requirements with growth opportunities for the next decade. Even more important than that, though, we believe families need to take an intergenerational view on their wealth – planning not just for retirement, but for their kids and grandkids – or they otherwise risk being left behind in this AI revolution.
